Out of the Rough: AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open (2024)

The DP World Tour looks to cap both the calendar year and the 2025 ‘Opening Swing’ with this week’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

This event is one of the newer events featured on the DP World Tour’s schedule as it was first played in 2015.

Originally co-sanctioned between the DP World Tour, Sunshine Tour and the Asian Tour, this event continues to be co-sanctioned between the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour and has been since 2022.

The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open returns to the Mont Choisy Le Golf, which made its DP World Tour debut for this very same event in 2022. Last year’s edition was held at the Heritage Golf Club.

Following this week, the DP World Tour will remain idle until January 10th for the Team Cup at the Abu Dhabi Golf Resort.

The Field

As most of the Tour’s stars head home for the holiday seasons, a collection of veterans and unsung heroes take to the only professional golf tournament held within the Indian Ocean.

As has been the trend, the field this event draws is one of the weaker ones we’ll see all year.

As it stands, there is just one golfer within the top 150 of the Official World Golf Rankings and just three within the top 170 teeing it up this week.

The lone golfer ranked within the top 150 is Antoine Rozner, who has unprecedented success at this golf tournament.

He made his DP World Tour debut at this event back in 2018 where he finished T7th. He followed that up in 2019 with a playoff loss to budding star Rasmus Hojgaard. He then claimed victory in 2022, at this very same course.

Now, he looks to become the first double-winner in the short history of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

John Parry (151st) and Daniel Brown (156th) are the other two golfers ranked within the top 170 of the OWGR playing this week.

Other notable names included in this week’s field include Nicolas Colsaerts, Richard Mansell, Andrea Pavan, Scott Jamieson and Angel Ayora.

Louis Oosthuizen claimed victory at this event a season ago, at the golf course he co-designed. He won’t be back this season to defend his title.

The Course

Mont Choisy Le Golf sits in the north-west of the island of Mauritius, approximately 14 miles from the capital, Port Louis.

The course is described as a beautifully-crafted parkland venue that was built on a former sugar plantation.

It is a Peter Matkovich design and was opened in 2018.

It plays as a Par 72 at approximately 6,890 yards, placing it on the shorter side of venues hosting on the DP World Tour.

Mont Choisy Le Golf features a multitude of water hazards which serve as its main line of defense.

The fairways are rolling and are guarded by minimal trees but there are plenty of scrub and volcanic landscapes waiting to catch any errant shot.

The course too sits slightly inland and therefore is not considered a coastal course.

Rozner won this event at this golf course in 2022 at -19, putting it inline to offer some low scoring.

The Weather

As of the time of writing this, there is at most a 15-percent chance of precipitation on Sunday, as the rest of the week holds just a five-percent chance. Temperatures are set at 84-to-85 degrees across all four days. Winds will be at the highest on Thursday and Sunday at 14 miles-per-hour and are set for ten miles-per-hour for Friday and Saturday. In all, it looks to be an ideal four days for golf.

Betting Card

Marcus Kinhult (+3000)

Kinhult made the most of his 2025 DP World Tour debut last week as he placed T2nd at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. He led most of the way before carding a two-over 74 on Sunday. He also finished his 2024 campaign with a T14th at the Genesis Championship. He’s a former winner on Tour, although way back in 2019 when he claimed the Betfred British Masters. He’s currently eighth on Tour in SG: APP, ninth in SG: OTT, 15th in GIR%, 22nd in scrambling, 24th in both driving accuracy and par five average scoring and 33rd in SG: PUTT.

Casey Jarvis (+3300)

South Africans have had a good showing at this event, winning three of the seven years. The 21-year-old started his 2024 season with a T11th at last week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship. It also wasn’t that long ago that he placed T6th at the Genesis Championship as well. He’s currently first on Tour in both par five average scoring and SG: PUTT. He’s also fifth in SG: OTT, eighth in GIR%, 49th in driving accuracy, 82nd in SG: APP and 111th in scrambling.

Martin Couvra (+7500)

Couvra is a graduate of the Challenge Tour where he had a ton of success in 2024. He capped his season with a seventh place finish at the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final. Beyond that he recorded 11 top 25’s, seven top tens and three top fives. He began his 2025 DP World Tour campaign with a T7th at the Alfred Dunhill Championship a week ago. Couvra is currently seventh on Tour in scrambling, 14th in SG: PUTT, 35th in SG: APP, 37th in SG: OTT, 40th in par five average scoring, 49th in driving accuracy and 59th in GIR%.

Freddy Schott (+9000)

Schott has had back-to-back strong performances to kick off his 2025 DP World Tour campaign. He placed T16th at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open and T15th at the BMW Australian Open. He also had some quality performances in the back-end of the 2024 season including a T17th at the Amgen Irish Open, T13th at the Open de Espana and T28th at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters. He’s currently second on Tour in both driving accuracy and SG: PUTT, ninth in both SG: OTT and par five average scoring, 18th in GIR%, 26th in scrambling and 123rd in SG: APP.

Sebastian Garcia (+22000)

Garcia started his 2025 season by placing T23rd at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open and T53rd at the BMW Australian PGA Championship. He struggled last season with just a few quality results but what I like about him this week is that through the start of the season (although a small sample size,) he’s first on Tour in SG: APP. He’s also eighth in driving accuracy, 31st in SG: OTT, 54th in GIR%, 60th in scrambling, 64th in par five average scoring and 121st in SG: PUTT. The putting is obviously the issue as he’s darn near last in that aspect. As long as the irons stay hot, he’ll give himself chances. A hot putter could change things drastically for him.
