Streamable Defenses of the Week - Week 5

Writer's picture: Nate (@WeKnowFantasy)Nate (@WeKnowFantasy)

Week 4 was a bit humbling for us here at the Streamable Defenses of the Week. After kind of steamrolling our way through the first three weeks of the season, our top option for Week 4 managed just one point. We did make slight progress in our middle and under 10-percent option. We’re still a top five fantasy option through the first four weeks so it’s not all lost. Let’s have a bounce back Week 5!

If you’re anything like me, you don’t draft a defense, or wait until your very last pick. I always find it more important to use earlier selections on position players as you can find great value on the waiver wire each week for defenses. I will also keep a running total of my top, second and below 10-percent results and provide a ranking of where my results rank according to other defenses throughout the season.

The premise of this article is to bring forth three streamable defenses that fantasy football players should look to use for that respective week. To qualify for this series, defenses must be owned in less than 40-percent of Yahoo and/or ESPN leagues. At least one of the suggested defenses will be owned in less than 10-percent of Yahoo and/or ESPN leagues to cater to every fantasy player. You can find last week’s results below and previous week’s results at the bottom of this article.

The Bengals played the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football. The Jaguars, as one of the most underwhelming teams to start the season, turned it on out of nowhere. They looked like a competent football team. The Bengals allowed 21 points and totaled just one sack. The Titans ended up losing their game with the New York Jets. I know they were without A.J. Brown and Julio Jones, but still, a big surprise. They recorded a sack and an interception. The Dallas Cowboys, our under 10-percent owned play, had the best week, as their secondary continues to impress. They had another two interception game, their fourth straight game to start the season with two interceptions. Impressive. Let’s get onto Week 4.

Week 4 Results

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Jacksonville Jaguars - 1 point

Tennessee Titans at New York Jets - 3 points

Dallas Cowboys vs. Carolina Panthers - 8 points

Overall Results

Top Suggestion - 37 points (DST5)

Middle Suggestion - 18 points (DST19)

Under 10% Owned - 9 points (DST30)

Week 5 Suggestions

Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions - Owned in 18% of Yahoo and 17.5% of ESPN leagues

It took all of me to not play my beloved Dallas defense here, but I like this Vikings’ play a bit better. The Vikings’ defensive line is one of the best in the league and they raise havoc on opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks. The Vikings’ average 3.2 sacks-per-game, which is tied for fourth most in the league. On top of that, they’ve only allowed a combined 31 points to offenses such as the Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns over the past two weeks. That’s impressive. They have just two takeaways on the season and both interceptions came against Kyler Murray and the Cardinals. On top of this, the Lions have allowed the tenth most fantasy points to opposing defenses thus far this season.

Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants - Owned in 23% of Yahoo and 32.2% of ESPN leagues

Let’s double down (or triple, maybe quadruple) on the Dallas Cowboys’ defense. After being my under 10-percent owned play last week, they’ve made it to my middle option in Week 5. Like I previously mentioned, they have recorded two interceptions in the four games to start the season. The New York Giants have not turned the ball over much to start the season however. They have only recorded three total, one of which was an interception. It’ll be a tall task for the Cowboys to have another double interception day, but if there’s a secondary that can do it, it’s the Dallas Cowboys. Let’s also not forget that the Cowboys had five sacks against the Panthers last week as well.

Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Jets - Owned in 2% of Yahoo and 1.9% of ESPN leagues

I don’t love this play because the Falcons’ defense, well, isn’t good, but they are getting the New York Jets at home this week, which can’t be ignored. Of course, the Jets have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing defenses through the first four weeks of the season. That’s it. That’s the entire breakdown of why I’m choosing the Falcons, because they’re playing the Jets. Must I say more?

Week 1 Results

Carolina Panthers vs. New York Jets - 9 points

Minnesota Vikings at Cincinnati Bengals - 5 points

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans - -3 points

Week 2 Results

Chicago Bears vs. Cincinnati Bengals - 19 points

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers - 6 points

Arizona Cardinals vs. Minnesota Vikings - 1 point

Week 3 Results

Carolina Panthers at Houston Texans - 8 points

Las Vegas Raiders vs. Miami Dolphins - 4 points

Tennessee Titans vs. Indianapolis Colts - 3 points
