The B-Team - Week 3 (2024)

I’d like to not talk about what happened in this series a week ago. However, in doing what I do here, I kind of have to. It was an embarrassing performance by me. I didn’t even get to 50 points. I wasn’t even able to get half-way to my 100-points goal. I guess there’s always a silver lining and that is there is nowhere to go but up from here - or we can only hope!

This is a series where I construct a hypothetical fantasy football lineup using players that are owned in less than 40-percent of Yahoo and/or ESPN leagues. The goal of the series is to top 100 PPR fantasy points using the make-shift team. The premise is to show that there is readily available value at all times across most waiver wires. You can find last week’s results below and the result of previous weeks at the bottom of this article in the future!

There wasn’t a single bright spot from our Week 2 lineup. If we had to point one out it would be Wan’Dale Robinson who recorded 9.8 fantasy points. The rest, we can simply ignore (or you can review and laugh at my picks from a week ago below.)

Week 2 Results

  • QB: Justin Fields - 11.4 Points

  • RB: Tank Bigsby - 0 Points

  • RB: Alexander Mattison - 6.1 Points

  • WR: Demarcus Robinson - 7 Points

  • WR: Wan’Dale Robinson - 9.8 Points

  • TE: Colby Parkinson - 2.2 Points

  • Flex: Brandin Cooks - 3.6 Points

  • Flex: Gabe Davis - 7.3 Points

  • Total: 47.3 Points

Week 3 Lineup

Quarterback

Geno Smith (Seattle Seahawks) - Owned in 41% of Yahoo and 26.9% of ESPN Leagues

Through the first two weeks of the season, Geno Smith is the QB10 on the season. I know it’s a small sample size, but with league-wide poor play, it’s promising that someone like Smith is eligible for this series. What I like most about Smith is that through his first two starts, he did things in different ways. In Week 1, he used his legs to record just over 17 fantasy points and in Week 2, he threw for 327 yards to record just over 17 points. He gets the Dolphins at home this week which isn’t a plus matchup, but in terms of this series, Smith is arguably as good as it gets.

Runningbacks

Cam Akers (Houston Texans) - Owned in 39% of Yahoo and 28.2% of ESPN Leagues

Both Joe Mixon and Damian Pierce will miss Sunday’s matchup with the Minnesota Vikings due to injury. That leaves Akers and Dare Ogunbowale to lead the backfield for the Texans. Akers is the better back of the two, although the depth chart lists Ogunbowale ahead of him. Either way, we’re getting the presumed lead back for a potent offense. We love that when we can in this series.

Samaje Perine (Kansas City Chiefs) - Owned in 35% of Yahoo and 24.1% of ESPN Leagues

As the world scrambled to add Carson Steele, I was content with adding Perine in my other leagues. Steele is the more fun name. The undrafted rookie who blew up in the pre-season. However, he’s not a three down back in the NFL. Neither is Perine but the Chiefs don’t need him to be. Also, there is no one better than the Chiefs and Andy Reid in getting the ball into their play makers hands. It may not be physical handoffs to Perine, but I expect him to get more touches than Steele during Pacheco’s absence.

Wide Receivers

Jauan Jennings (San Francisco 49ers) - Owned in 26% of Yahoo and 33.8% of ESPN Leagues

Deebo Samuel has been ruled out for the 49ers’ matchup with division rivals Los Angeles Rams this week. Along with that, Brandon Aiyuk has struggled to contribute out of the gate after missing the entire pre-season due to contract disputes and George Kittle is doubtful to play. On top of all of that, Christian McCaffrey remains out as well. What I’m getting at is, someone has to catch the ball in San Francisco and that should be Jennings. We’ve seen him be involved through the first two weeks of the season already, with most of the aforementioned players healthy.

Gabe Davis (Jacksonville Jaguars) - Owned in 33% of Yahoo and 43.2% of ESPN Leagues

Gabe Davis revenge game incoming? I know I played him last week in my flex in this series and he didn’t really show up but he did have seven targets in the Jaguars’ Week 2 loss to the Browns. The Jaguars travel to Buffalo for Monday Night Football as Davis will look to ball out against his former team. The connection between Davis and Trevor Lawrence is heating up as he’s seen ten targets through the first two weeks. It’s just a matter of time before they connect over the top for a long one (or two.)

Tight End

Mike Gesicki (Cincinnati Bengals) - Owned in 35% of Yahoo and 24.4% of ESPN Leagues

Can you name the most targeted player on the Bengals through two weeks? If you said Mike Gesicki, you would be correct. I’m not sure what it is between Joe Burrow and Gesicki but it’s something serious. He’s seen 13 targets through the first two weeks of the season, catching ten of them for 109 yards.

Flex

Josh Downs (Indianapolis Colts) - Owned in 25% of Yahoo and 9.4% of ESPN Leagues

Downs is off the injury report for the first time all season as the Colts play the Bears this week. We have seen Alec Pierce go off to start the season for the Colts in the Josh Downs’ role. There’s no doubt Downs is a better receiver than Pierce so I’m hoping it’s a bit of plug-and-play for Downs here this week.

Wan’Dale Robinson (New York Giants) - Owned in 20% of Yahoo and 15% of ESPN Leagues

This is the third straight week of The B-Team where Robinson has made an appearance. He saw an insane 12 targets in Week 1 and caught a touchdown in Week 2. He’s done nothing but benefit me through the first two weeks of the season. The Giants’ offense showed some life last week and rookie Malik Nabers showed up. As defenses begin to focus on Nabers, Robinson is going to benefit from that.
